RTF Shares Thanks: Dancing Legos in Lake Andes, SD!

Posted on July 26, 2018 · Posted in News

There are a variety of ways to learn code, but we can’t think of many better than via a singing and dancing Lego robot named Vernie.  Students at Andes Central Elementary School in Lake Andes, SD are now doing just that!  Mrs. Nelson noticed that many of her students in the third through fifth grades didn’t always have the opportunities to engage in a variety of STEM and Art projects outside of school .  She thought Vernie the Lego Robot would be super rewarding and we couldn’t have been prouder to make that a reality with the support of our generous donors.

Mrs. Nelson describes the myriad of tasks that her students are now diving into:

There are five different robot models to build. The robot can then be programmed to sing, dance, sense distance, see objects and colors, show facial expressions, grip and carry accessories, and launch darts. Vernie can respond to verbal cues and show moods with facial expressions. The robot senses impact and knows when he is picked up.

Vernie is obviously quite a popular project now!

Mrs. Nelson warmly shared with us how big of an impact Venrie is already having:

Thank you so much for your generous donation of the Lego Vernie the Robot. My third graders have been having a blast with him. They have learned how to follow directions very carefully and thoroughly. Watching them grow as programmers is amazing. Your assistance has helped my students grow their technological knowledge. I think that it is so neat that we can actually build five different robots with the kit. Each robot has different capabilities and programs. Again, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

With gratitude,
Mrs. Nelson

Technology has an amazing capability to inspire students to learn new skills and help them pursue theirs passions throughout STEM and other areas.  These Lake Andes students are getting an early start in learning and preparing for careers as designers, artists, engineers and software developers.  We’re super grateful that we’ve been able to assist.  We especially enjoyed the colorful letters the students sent to us!
