RTF Shares Thanks: Science in Bunn, NC!

Here at RTF we’re huge fans of the science education that provides the foundation for the technology we use today.  This is what made Mr. Hagman’s project in Bunn, NC so powerful and special.  With his students excited to learn via science experiments, Mr. Hagman wanted to strengthen their knowledge through the combination of Raspberry Pis and Science Kits.  Generously, matching funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation helped make this project possible.

In particular, the 250 students at Mr. Hagman’s school are benefiting from the CanaKit Raspberry Pi starter kits, Food Science/Crimebusters science kits and other scientific equipment for an ecosystem field trip.  Mr. Hagman’s students were using this technology to compete in the Science Olympiad, but also in general classroom activity.  These projects showcased how technology and science education go hand in hand, especially with students hungry to learn all aspects of STEM!

Mr. Hagman shared with us that not only will the students benefit, but their parents and community will too:

I am shocked and appreciative towards your generosity. These materials will be extremely impactful towards the building of STEM skills in our students. Our students are great kids, but they lack the materials to do experiments. These materials will not only bring the world of STEM to our students, but to their parents and the community as well. Again thank you for your generosity.

With gratitude,
Mr. Hagman

The students thoroughly enjoyed the combination of coding, scientific experimentation and general engineering.  They disassembled and reassembled the technology in practical hands on learning exercises and are even using the scientific equipment to go on an ecology field trip studying coastal ocean environments!  These resources will prepare students for lives as scientists, engineers and innovators with career paths including computer programmers, electrical engineers, and biologists.

The students especially highlighted their love for the Raspberry Pis and the Science Olympiad in their letters.
